Capital Improvements

As a part of the 2027 agenda for Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) the Town has focused a significant portion of CIP budget to infrastructure improvements focused on decarbonization and working toward the 2045 full electrification goal. Some of these CIP Projects are an updated solar array and backup batteries for Town Hall, increasing the number of electric vehicle charging stations around town, and moving to heat pump water heaters at all town facilities. The full list of capital improvement projects can be found in the town budget (hyperlink). The Town will continue to introduce new capital improvement projects as well as updates on existing infrastructure as they meet the goals laid out in the 2005 climate action plan and strive to achieve the 2045 full electrification goals.

Among the current slate of funded capital improvement projects are several which tie directly into the town’s decarbonization goals.

1.       City Council Chambers HVAC improvement. This project will replace the gas furnaces with heat pumps in an effort for electrification.  The project supports the goal of converting Town's natural gas heating systems to full electric to reduce greenhouse gas.  The project will investigate necessary accommodations for future improvements to the Civic Center.

2.       The emergency back‐up generator at Town Hall has been in service for 29 years and needs replacement. The generator will be replaced with a battery energy storage system (BESS) that will allow Town Hall to leverage its existing photovoltaic system on‐site during power outages. During current power outages, the solar panels become inoperable. Further, as part of this project, the electrical room at Town Hall will undergo a panel upgrade which will increase the capacity of service that is currently offered. This will allow for additional EV charging portsto be installed in the Town Hall parking lot while also bringing emergency back‐up power to more parts of the building during power outages.
